Obesity has an adverse on health and (social) life. Preventing and fighting overweight is very important, because loosing weight and maintaining it is very difficult. Young people (aged 5-19) who are obese at young age, remain most of the time obese for the rest of their lives. It also harms mental health and learning skills.
Obesity, a mental and physical disadvantage
However children and adolescents are more receptive for advertisement. Unfortunately, with the rise of processed foods, overweight has skyrocketed in the last 40 years. According to a study by Imperial College London and the World Health Organization (WHO) it has risen tenfold. In the last decade people in the West have started to eat healthy and are consuming less processed foods. To compensate for these losses, big food companies are now aggressively expanding in developing countries. They abuse the notion people have that everything from the West is good. In many countries there are a lot of healthy fruits and vegetables, but people still want the processed foods. In other countries however, healthy is expensive and not affordable for all. The consumption of cheap energy-dense foods, especially highly processed carbohydrates has exploded.
Professor Majid Ezzati, of Imperial’s School of Public Health: “Over the past four decades, obesity rates in children and adolescents have soared globally, and continue to do so in low- and middle-income countries. More recently, they have plateaued in higher income countries, although obesity levels remain unacceptably high. The trend predicts a generation of children and adolescents growing up obese and also malnourished. ”
Causes of Obesity
There are other causes of obesity, besides alcohol and processed and sugary foods:
- Sedentary Lifestyle. Sitting too much and no exercise.
- Some genetic disorders can cause obesity (Bardet-Biedl, Prader-Willi , Alström & Cohen syndromes)
- Stress, boredom and depression can stimulate more eating
- Medicines like antidepressants
Obesity can cause high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, cancer, gallstones, strokes, problems during pregnancy and other health issues. Prevention is again the key as curing it proves to be difficult.. A healthy lifestyle with much exercise and a healthy diet. Minimize sugar & grain consumption and eat healthy fats and organic vegetables & fruits.
